Northern Pike

If you're looking for Northern Pike near Round Lake, Illinois, the chain of lakes offers a decent opportunity. These waters, including Round Lake and Long Lake, hold a healthy population of pike, especially in the weedy bays and channels connecting the lakes. Spring, right after ice-out, and fall are the most productive times to target them. As the water warms, pike move into the shallows to spawn and feed aggressively. In the fall, they're bulking up for winter. Try casting large spoons, spinners, or jerkbaits along weed lines and near submerged timber. Dead bait rigs can also be effective, especially in deeper water. Be aware that pike in this area can be ambush predators, so focus on areas with good cover. The Chain O'Lakes State Park, a short drive away, offers additional pike fishing opportunities and boat access. A local tip: use a steel leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have razor-sharp teeth.
