Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike in Schaumburg can be a rewarding challenge. Busse Woods (Ned Brown Preserve) is one of the better locations, with its chain of lakes providing suitable habitat for these ambush predators. Pike thrive in weedy areas, so focus your efforts around submerged vegetation and along the edges of weed beds. Spring and early fall are the most productive times, as the water temperatures are cooler and the pike are more active. Larger lures, such as spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits, are effective for covering water and attracting strikes. Don't forget to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. A local tip: the shoreline access at Busse Woods is quite good, but a small boat or kayak will allow you to reach more secluded areas. The pike in these lakes aren't generally giants, but fish in the 5-8 pound range are certainly possible, offering a thrilling fight.
