Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, can be a rewarding experience if you know where to look. While not as prevalent as bass, pike are present in some of the larger lakes and connected waterways in the region. Spring is undoubtedly the best time, just after ice-out, when pike are actively feeding in shallow bays and backwaters preparing to spawn. Look for areas with emerging vegetation, as these spots will attract baitfish and, consequently, pike. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective choices. A local angler's trick is to use a wire leader, as pike have sharp teeth and can easily bite through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Focus your efforts on areas where creeks enter the lake, as these areas often have increased oxygen levels and attract baitfish. Don't be surprised if you hook into a largemouth bass while targeting pike – it's common in these waters.
