Northern Pike

While not a Northern Pike hotspot, Wayne, Illinois, does offer some opportunities to tangle with these toothy predators in the larger lakes and sloughs within the DuPage County forest preserves. Busse Woods, with its network of interconnected lakes, is a prime location to begin your search. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are your best bets. Pike will be actively feeding in these periods. Focus your efforts around weed beds and areas with submerged structure. A steel leader is essential, as these fish have razor-sharp teeth. A local tactic is to use large, flashy spoons or crankbaits retrieved at a moderate speed. Be aware that pike in this area may not reach trophy sizes, but they can still provide exciting action.
