Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with some northern pike in Iowa? Aredale, Iowa, though small, is within striking distance of some excellent pike waters. While Aredale itself doesn't have large, well-known pike lakes, the nearby Shell Rock River and its associated backwaters offer good opportunities, especially during the spring spawning run and again in the fall as water temperatures cool. Pike often lurk in weedy areas and near submerged structure, so focus your efforts around these spots. For bank access, explore areas where the river runs close to county roads; be mindful of private property. Anglers launching canoes or kayaks can explore a greater range of the river. Early morning and late afternoon are prime times. Remember, pike are ambush predators, so use lures that mimic their prey, such as large minnow baits, spoons, or spinnerbaits. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. The pike in this region tend to be in the 2-5 pound range, but larger specimens are certainly possible. Be prepared for a fight!
