Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with some Northern Pike in Eastern Iowa? Belle Plaine, while not necessarily a pike fishing 'hotspot,' offers some surprisingly good opportunities in the local waterways. The Iowa River, which flows relatively close by, holds a decent population of pike, particularly in the slower-moving sections and backwaters. Spring is prime time, right after ice-out, when pike move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall can also be productive as they feed aggressively before winter. Local Tip: Focus on areas with submerged vegetation or fallen timber. Pike are ambush predators and love to lurk in cover. Also, consider exploring some of the smaller creeks and oxbow lakes that connect to the Iowa River. These can hold some overlooked pike. A steel leader is essential, as their teeth are razor sharp. Access to the river is available at various points along county roads, but be sure to check local regulations regarding access and trespassing.
