Northern Pike

If you're looking to tangle with some Northern Pike in Iowa, Clayton offers access to the mighty Mississippi River, a renowned pike habitat. The backwaters, sloughs, and weedy areas near Clayton are prime spots to find these ambush predators. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target them, as they move into shallower water to spawn or feed before winter. For bank access, try the areas around the Clayton County Conservation Area, but be prepared for some walking. Boat access is available at several public ramps, but be aware of fluctuating river levels and current, especially after heavy rains. Pike in this area can reach impressive sizes, so be sure to bring your heavy gear and steel leaders – these fish have sharp teeth!
