Northern Pike

Barryton, Michigan, offers some surprisingly good Northern Pike fishing, particularly in the Muskegon River and its connected lakes and backwaters. What makes this area special is the relatively shallow, weedy environment that Pike thrive in. Spring, right after ice-out, is prime time as the Pike move into shallow bays to spawn. Fall is also excellent, as they aggressively feed before winter. For a local tip, try focusing your efforts around the mouths of creeks entering the Muskegon River – these areas often hold concentrations of baitfish and, consequently, Pike. There are several public access points along the Muskegon near Barryton, but be mindful of water levels, as some ramps can be tricky to navigate with larger boats during low water. The Pike here tend to average in the 2-5 pound range, but larger specimens are definitely present, so be prepared with heavier tackle.
