Northern Pike

If you're looking to tangle with some toothy Northern Pike, Big Rapids, Michigan, offers some fantastic freshwater opportunities. The Muskegon River, which winds its way through the heart of Big Rapids, is your primary target. Its slower-moving sections and abundant weed beds provide ideal ambush points for these predators. Spring (post-spawn) and fall are prime times, as the pike are actively feeding to recover or fatten up for winter. For bank anglers, try accessing the river from Northend Riverside Park or along the Riverwalk in downtown Big Rapids. If you're bringing a boat, the public launch near the US-131 bridge is a good option. Be aware that river levels can fluctuate, especially after heavy rains, so check conditions before you go. The pike in this stretch of the Muskegon tend to average in the 2-4 pound range, but larger specimens are definitely present, so don't be afraid to throw larger lures or bait.
