Northern Pike

Shoreham, Michigan offers surprisingly good Northern Pike fishing, especially in the waterways connected to Lake Michigan. While the lake itself can be productive, focus on the mouths of rivers and creeks that flow into it. These areas provide ideal ambush points for pike, particularly during the spring spawning run and again in the fall as they fatten up for winter. Early spring (April-May) and late fall (October-November) are prime times. Consider exploring the Galien River; its slower currents and abundant weed beds hold good numbers of pike. A local tip: Pike in this area can be quite wary, so use fluorocarbon leaders, even in murky water, to reduce visibility. Also, be prepared for some heavy vegetation; weedless lures are essential. The pike here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective choices. Be aware that boat access to some of these areas may be limited, so scouting for accessible shore fishing spots can pay off.
