Northern Pike

Chardon, Ohio, nestled in the snowbelt, might not be the first place that comes to mind for trophy pike, but the local lakes and reservoirs offer a surprisingly robust fishery. Punderson Lake, a glacial kettle lake, is a popular choice. Its deep, cold waters provide excellent habitat for pike to thrive. Spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as the water cools, are the most productive times to target these predators. They'll be actively feeding to replenish energy or prepare for winter. A key local tactic is to target the weed edges with large spinnerbaits or crankbaits. Pike in Punderson Lake can be surprisingly aggressive. Be prepared for some explosive strikes! Boat access is available, but shoreline fishing can also be effective, especially around the dam area. Remember to use a wire leader, as these fish have sharp teeth.
