Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near West Leechburg? Focus your efforts on the Kiski River, which, while not known as a Pike mecca, does hold a population of these ambush predators. The best time to fish for Pike here is in the spring, shortly after ice-out, and again in the fall as water temperatures cool. Look for Pike in areas with submerged vegetation, fallen trees, or other structure that provides cover. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits are effective lures. Don't be afraid to use a steel leader, as Pike have sharp teeth. The area around the confluence of the Loyalhanna Creek and the Kiski River can be particularly productive. Public access to the Kiski is available at several points along its length, including near the Roaring Run Trail. Pike in this area are typically in the 2-5 pound range, with larger fish possible. Be aware of the current regulations regarding size and creel limits for Pike in the Kiski River. A Pennsylvania fishing license is required.
