Rainbow Trout

Cooperstown and the surrounding area boast some excellent opportunities for rainbow trout, particularly in the Susquehanna River and its tributaries. These streams offer a classic trout fishing experience with riffles, runs, and pools holding wild and stocked rainbows. Spring and fall are prime times to target these fish, as the water temperatures are ideal, and the trout are actively feeding. During the spring, focus on nymphing with patterns like Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears. In the fall, dry fly fishing can be productive, especially with attractor patterns like the Adams or Elk Hair Caddis. Public access can be found along many of the roads that parallel the streams, but be sure to check the regulations for specific sections. A local tip: the water levels can fluctuate rapidly after rain, so check the forecast before you go. Also, be mindful of private property and respect landowners' rights. The rainbows in these streams typically range from 10-16 inches, with the occasional larger fish thrown in.
