Rainbow Trout

While Hammond isn't necessarily known as a premier trout destination, the smaller tributaries that feed into the St. Lawrence River can hold Rainbow Trout, particularly during the spring and fall spawning runs. These streams are often overlooked, providing a more secluded fishing experience. Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) are the peak seasons. Focus on areas with riffles, runs, and pools. These fish are often stocked, so check the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) stocking reports for specific locations and stocking dates. Access to these streams can be limited, often requiring some hiking. Be respectful of private property and look for designated public access points. A local tip: try using small spinners or drifting nymphs under an indicator in the deeper pools. The rainbows here might not be giants, but the peaceful setting makes for a rewarding day on the water.
