Rainbow Trout

While Lake George isn't primarily known as a rainbow trout fishery, it offers a unique opportunity to target these fish in a stunning Adirondack setting. The lake's deep, cold waters provide suitable habitat, and the DEC stocks rainbows annually to supplement the population. Trolling is the most popular method, particularly in the spring and fall when the fish are more active in the upper water column. Use downriggers or lead core line to get your lures down to the desired depth. Spoons and streamer flies are effective choices. A local's secret: Focus your efforts near the mouths of tributaries, as rainbows often congregate there to feed. Access to the lake is readily available via numerous public boat launches. Keep in mind that Lake George's water is exceptionally clear, so using fluorocarbon leaders and lighter line can be beneficial. The rainbow trout here are generally well-fed and can put up a good fight.
