Rainbow Trout

While Lake Ontario gets most of the attention for salmon and steelhead, the streams around Mexico, New York, offer a seasonal opportunity to target rainbow trout. These fish are primarily steelhead – lake-run rainbows – that migrate up the Salmon River and its tributaries to spawn. The peak runs occur in the spring and fall. Access to the Salmon River is readily available through numerous public fishing areas. Egg sacs, nymphs, and small streamers are popular and effective baits. Check the water levels before you go, as high or low water can significantly impact fishing success. A local tip: focus on areas with deeper pools and runs, where the trout tend to hold. The rainbows in this area are known for their size and fighting ability, so be prepared for a battle!
