Rainbow Trout

While Ferryville might be better known for its warm-water species, some surprisingly good rainbow trout fishing can be found in the smaller, spring-fed streams that feed into the Mississippi River near town. These streams, though often overlooked, offer a unique opportunity to target these beautiful fish in a scenic setting. Spring and fall are the best times to target rainbows, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or waxworms can be effective. Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies is also a popular tactic. Access can be challenging, as many of these streams run through private property, so be sure to obtain permission before fishing. The rainbow trout here are typically smaller than those found in larger rivers, but their vibrant colors and willingness to strike make them a rewarding target. Remember to check the Wisconsin DNR's trout regulations for specific stream closures and size limits.
