Sheepshead

Sheepshead, known locally as "convict fish" due to their black and white stripes, are a challenging but rewarding target around Sea Island. These fish are notorious for their subtle bites and preference for hard structure. Focus your efforts around docks, pilings, bridges, and oyster beds, as these are the areas where they find their primary food source: crustaceans. Spring and fall are prime times to target sheepshead, as the water temperatures are favorable, and they are actively feeding. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice, but shrimp and barnacles can also be effective. A key local tip: the Jekyll Island pier often holds good numbers of sheepshead. Use a small, sharp hook and be ready to set the hook at the slightest tap. Be patient and persistent, as sheepshead fishing requires a delicate touch and quick reflexes.
