Sheepshead

Wilmington's bridges, docks, and rock piles are prime habitat for Sheepshead, particularly those in the Cape Fear River and its adjacent creeks. These structure-loving fish are abundant around barnacle-encrusted pilings. Spring and fall are peak seasons, as water temperatures moderate and Sheepshead move inshore to spawn or forage heavily before winter. A fiddler crab is the bait of choice, fished close to the structure. Be prepared for a subtle bite; Sheepshead are notorious bait stealers. For better access, consider launching from the public boat ramp at Snow's Cut, allowing you to quickly reach multiple promising locations. Remember that Sheepshead in this region can be surprisingly large, so don't be afraid to upsize your tackle.
