Smallmouth Bass

Grand Rapids, Minnesota, offers surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing, often overshadowed by its walleye reputation. The Mississippi River, as it winds through the area, is a fantastic option for bronzebacks. Look for rocky stretches, current breaks, and submerged wood. Additionally, several of the larger lakes like Pokegama also hold good populations of smallmouth, particularly around rocky points and islands. The best time to target smallmouth here is from late spring through early fall, with the peak season being June and July when they are actively feeding. A great local tactic is to use topwater lures early and late in the day, especially poppers and walking baits. For deeper water, try dragging a tube jig or Carolina-rigged lizard. Be aware of changing water levels in the Mississippi, as this can affect the bite. Access to the river is available at several public landings and parks, but a small boat or canoe is recommended to effectively fish the river.
