Chasing Smallmouth Bass around Demarest, NJ, offers some surprisingly good opportunities if you know where to look. The nearby Ramapo River, known for its rocky structure and riffles, provides ideal habitat for smallies. While not a trophy fishery, the Ramapo holds a healthy population of scrappy smallmouth. Spring and fall are the best seasons, when the water temperatures are moderate. Focus your efforts on areas with current breaks, boulders, and deeper pools. A local tip is to access the river via the numerous parks and access points along Route 202. Wading is common, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jigs are all effective presentations. Remember to check water levels before you go, as heavy rains can make the river unfishable. The smallmouth in this region are known for their aggressive strikes, so hold on tight!
