Newton, New Jersey, offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing if you know where to look. The upper reaches of the Paulins Kill River, with its rocky runs and deeper pools, are a prime location. Also, check out Swartswood Lake, the state's oldest natural lake, as it holds a healthy population of smallmouth. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, as the bass are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. Early mornings and late evenings are particularly productive. For the Paulins Kill, wading is often necessary, so be prepared with appropriate gear and footwear. Be aware of water levels, especially after heavy rains. On Swartswood Lake, the state park provides excellent access, but it can get crowded, especially on weekends. Look for submerged structure and rocky points; smallmouth love these areas. The smallmouth in this region tend to be scrappy fighters, so use appropriate tackle.
