While not as abundant as in some other states, walleye can be found in a few select bodies of water. Lake Hopatcong, though a bit of a drive, is the largest lake in New Jersey and has a population of walleye. Targeting walleye here requires some dedication and knowledge of their habits. The best times to fish for walleye are typically in the spring and fall, particularly during the low-light hours of dawn and dusk. They prefer cooler water temperatures and will often be found in deeper areas. Jigging with minnows or using crankbaits that imitate baitfish are popular techniques. A key tip is to use your electronics to locate submerged structure or drop-offs, as walleye often relate to these features. Be aware that the walleye population in some of these lakes is maintained through stocking, so check the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife for the latest stocking reports and regulations.
