Spotted Bass

While largemouth bass often steal the spotlight, the Avondale Estates area also provides opportunities to target spotted bass. These feisty fish can be found in many of the same waters as largemouth, but they often prefer slightly deeper and clearer areas. Stone Mountain Lake can be a good starting point. Look for rocky points, drop-offs, and areas with current. Spotted bass are aggressive and will readily strike a variety of lures, including crankbaits, jigs, and spinnerbaits. They are particularly fond of lures that imitate crawfish. Spring and fall are prime times to target spotted bass, as they move into shallower water to feed. One local tip is to pay attention to water clarity – spotted bass tend to be more active in clearer water than largemouth. Also, be prepared for a strong fight – spotted bass are known for their energetic runs and jumps.
