Spotted Bass

Spotted bass, while not as abundant as largemouth, can be found in the waterways around Folkston, Georgia, particularly in the St. Marys River. These feisty fish prefer areas with current and rocky bottoms, so focus your efforts in the main river channel and around any visible structure. Spring and fall are excellent times to target them, as they are actively feeding. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics that imitate baitfish are all effective. Try fishing near the Highway 252 bridge – the riprap there often holds spots. Be aware of the strong currents in some areas of the river, especially after heavy rains. Also, practice catch and release to help maintain the spotted bass population, as they are more vulnerable to overfishing than largemouth in this region.
