Tautog

Tautog, also known as blackfish, are a challenging but rewarding target around Cape Vincent. While primarily a saltwater species, they can be found in the brackish waters of the St. Lawrence River near its outlet to Lake Ontario, particularly around rocky structures and submerged timber. The best time to target tautog is during the fall, as they move into shallower water to feed before the onset of winter. Use heavy tackle and strong hooks, as tautog are powerful fighters and often hold tight to cover. Crab baits are a favorite, but clams and mussels can also be effective. Focus your efforts on areas with strong currents and plenty of structure. A local tip: the breakwaters and bridge pilings around Cape Vincent can be productive spots. Be prepared to lose some tackle, as tautog are masters of hiding in rocky crevices. Check local regulations for any specific restrictions on tautog fishing in the area.
