These fish are masters of structure, inhabiting rocky bottoms, wrecks, and pilings in the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The best time to target them is during the fall and winter months when they move into shallower waters to feed before spawning. When targeting Tautog, remember that they are notoriously finicky eaters, so using fresh bait and a sensitive rod is essential. Local tip: Green crabs are the bait of choice, and a slow, deliberate presentation is key. Also, be prepared to lose some tackle, as these fish are experts at wrapping your line around structure. Many anglers launch from marinas in the Great South Bay to target tautog around bridges and docks.
