Flounder fishing around Fire Island can be a rewarding experience, especially if you're looking for a more relaxed angling adventure. The Great South Bay and other shallow, sandy-bottomed areas around the island are prime flounder habitat. Spring and fall are typically the best times to target them, as they move into these areas to feed. When targeting flounder here, remember that they are masters of camouflage, so presenting your bait slowly and deliberately is key. Local tip: A simple bottom rig with a small piece of sandworm or clam is often all you need. Also, pay attention to the tide; flounder tend to be more active during periods of moving water. Many anglers launch from marinas in Patchogue or Sayville and motor over to the protected waters around Fire Island. The flounder population is generally healthy, but be sure to check the current regulations regarding size and bag limits.
