Tautog, also known as Blackfish, aren't a common target in the immediate vicinity of Niagara Falls, NY, but the lower Niagara River and the eastern end of Lake Ontario can offer some opportunities. This area presents a unique challenge due to the mix of fresh and brackish water. Focus your efforts around submerged structure like bridge pilings, rock piles, and any artificial reefs if present, especially where the current creates eddies. Tautog are masters of camouflage and prefer areas with plenty of cover. The fall months, particularly October and November, are the peak season as the water cools. A key local tip is to use green crabs for bait, as they are highly effective for enticing Tautog. Another tip is to fish during slack tide, as the strong currents can make it difficult to present your bait effectively. Tautog in this region may not reach the trophy sizes found further south, but they are still a prized catch for their delicious flavor and challenging fight.
