Tautog

Port Jefferson Harbor and the surrounding Long Island Sound offer excellent tautog (blackfish) opportunities. The key here is understanding their seasonal movements and preferred habitat. Tautog are structure-oriented fish, so focus your efforts around rocky bottoms, wrecks, and pilings. Spring and fall are prime times, as tautog move inshore during these periods, following the forage. Natural presentations, such as green crabs or clams, are highly effective. Be prepared to adjust your depth and presentation based on water temperature and current. A local tip: The Port Jefferson Ferry jetties can be productive, but be mindful of ferry traffic and strong currents. Also, tautog fishing often requires heavier tackle than other inshore species, so be sure to bring appropriate gear.
