Tautog

While Port Crane is inland, you'll need to head towards the coast for Tautog. Focus your efforts in the Long Island Sound and surrounding bays. Tautog, also known as blackfish, are structure-loving fish, so target rocky bottoms, reefs, and wrecks. Fall is prime time, as they feed aggressively before winter. Look for green crabs – a Tautog favorite – to be prevalent in your chum and bait. Consider using a stout rod and reel setup with strong hooks, as these fish are powerful and live in snag-filled environments. Water clarity is key, so fish on days with minimal wind and runoff. Access is available via numerous charter boats and public launch ramps along the coast, but book ahead, especially during peak season. Keep an eye on water temps; Tautog become less active as the water cools significantly.
