Although Whitney Point is inland, anglers wishing to tangle with tautog (blackfish) in New York should focus on the coastal regions. Tautog are notoriously picky eaters and can be challenging to catch, but the reward is well worth the effort. These fish are structure-oriented, so target rocky bottoms, wrecks, and pilings. Fall is generally considered the best time to target tautog, as they move into shallower waters to feed before winter. Green crabs are the go-to bait for tautog, but clams and mussels can also be effective. Use a heavy jig or a bottom rig with a strong hook. Tautog are masters of stealing bait, so be prepared to set the hook quickly. Local tip: use a short, stiff rod to help you detect subtle bites and drive the hook home. Also, pay attention to the tide; tautog often feed more aggressively during slack tide. Be aware of regulations regarding size and possession limits.
