Tautog

If you're after Tautog, or 'Blackfish,' Yorktown provides access to some productive fishing grounds within the Chesapeake Bay. Targeting these fish requires a focus on structure, specifically rocky bottoms, bridge pilings, and wrecks. The best time for Tautog is during the fall and winter months when they move inshore to spawn. A productive area is around the pilings of the Yorktown Bridge, but be mindful of boat traffic. Use stout tackle with heavy jigs or bottom rigs baited with green crabs or fiddler crabs, their preferred food. Tautog are notoriously picky eaters and can be difficult to hook, so be patient and pay attention to subtle bites. The Tautog population in the Chesapeake Bay is managed with strict regulations, so be sure to check the current size and creel limits before heading out.
