Walleye in Shaver Lake present a unique angling challenge, as they aren't native to this high-elevation reservoir. Success hinges on understanding their preference for cooler, deeper water, especially during the warmer months. Spring and fall are prime times, as the water temperatures are more consistent and the walleye are actively feeding. Look for them near submerged structure and rocky points. A slow-trolling approach with worm harnesses or crankbaits that mimic the local forage, like smaller trout or kokanee, is often effective. A key local tip: pay close attention to the thermocline. Walleye will often congregate just above it, seeking the optimal balance of temperature and oxygen. There are a few public boat ramps around the lake, but be aware that water levels can fluctuate significantly, impacting access. Shaver Lake walleye aren't known for reaching trophy sizes, but a dedicated angler can still find some respectable fish.
