White Bass

If you're looking to tangle with some white bass in north Georgia, Pendergrass offers a convenient base for exploring several productive fisheries. Lake Lanier, a short drive west, is renowned for its substantial white bass population. These fish make impressive spawning runs up the lake's tributaries in early spring (March-April), providing excellent fishing opportunities in the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers. Look for schooling activity near points and humps. Focus on areas where the river channels meet the main lake. Another option is the upper reaches of the Middle Oconee River above Lake Jackson. While the white bass here may not reach the sizes found in Lanier, the river offers a more intimate fishing experience. A local tip: Keep an eye on water levels after spring rains, as rising water can trigger even more intense spawning runs. Also, light tackle is key – white bass aren't line shy, but they respond well to smaller presentations like spinners and jigs.
