Black Sea Bass

While not as widely known as other species, Black Sea Bass fishing can be quite productive around Emerald Isle, especially on the nearshore reefs and wrecks. The cooler months, from fall through spring, are generally the best times to target them. These bottom-dwelling fish are typically found in relatively deep water, so focus your efforts around structure. A simple bottom rig baited with squid, cut fish, or shrimp is often all you need. Dropping your bait near artificial reefs or natural hard bottom areas will increase your chances of success. The Atlantic Beach artificial reef is a popular spot, but be prepared for some competition from other anglers. Pay attention to the current and adjust your weight accordingly to keep your bait on the bottom. Black Sea Bass are delicious table fare, but be sure to check the current regulations regarding size and creel limits before you go.
