Sheepshead

Looking to tangle with some sheepshead around Emerald Isle? These convict-striped fish are a common sight around docks, bridges, and rock piles. The warmer months, especially late spring through early fall, are the most productive times to target them. Sheepshead are notorious bait stealers, so a sharp hook and a patient approach are essential. Fiddler crabs are the go-to bait, but barnacles scraped directly from pilings also work well. Drop your bait straight down alongside structure, as sheepshead rarely stray far. The Bogue Inlet Pier is a popular spot, offering easy access to deeper water and plenty of barnacle-encrusted pilings. Be mindful of the tide; sheepshead often feed more aggressively during periods of strong current. Remember to use heavier tackle, as these fish are surprisingly strong and will try to break you off on structure.
