Brown Trout

While Arcadia isn't a classic trout destination, the surrounding coulee region in western Wisconsin harbors some surprisingly good Brown Trout streams. These streams are often small, spring-fed creeks that offer a more intimate and challenging fishing experience. Spring and fall are the best times to target browns, with the mayfly hatches in the spring and the pre-spawn activity in the fall offering excellent opportunities. Small spinners, dry flies, and nymphs are all effective. Remember to practice catch and release to protect the population. Many of these streams are on private land, so always seek permission before fishing. The Wisconsin DNR website provides information on public access easements. The brown trout in these streams are often wild and can be quite wary, so stealth and careful presentation are key. Expect to find fish in the 8-12 inch range, with the occasional larger fish.
