Brown Trout

While Brown Deer isn't typically known as a brown trout hotspot, determined anglers can find opportunities in the Milwaukee River and its tributaries. The river offers some limited habitat suitable for brown trout, particularly in areas with cooler water and good cover, like submerged logs or undercut banks. Spring and fall, especially during and after rain events, can be productive as trout become more active and move around. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or minnows can be effective. Fly fishing with nymphs and streamers can also be productive in the deeper pools. Access can be a challenge, as much of the shoreline is privately owned, so be sure to respect property boundaries and look for public access points. The DNR stocks some areas, so checking their stocking reports can point you in the right direction. Don't expect trophy-sized fish, but a wild or stocked brown trout in this urban setting is a rewarding catch.
