Brown Trout

While Cambria, Wisconsin isn't necessarily a brown trout hotspot, determined anglers can find some opportunities in the local streams that feed into the Fox River. These smaller tributaries often hold surprisingly good populations of browns, especially in their upper reaches. Spring and fall are the best times to target them, particularly during or after periods of rain when the fish become more active. Focus on areas with undercut banks, fallen logs, and deeper pools. A helpful tip: access to some of these streams can be limited, so be sure to obtain landowner permission before fishing on private property. The brown trout in these streams tend to be wild and wary, so stealth and a natural presentation are key. Consider using small spinners, spoons, or nymphs to entice a strike. Don't expect trophy-sized fish, but the chance to catch wild browns in a secluded setting makes it a worthwhile pursuit.
