Brown Trout

While Clinton, Wisconsin, isn't exactly known as a brown trout mecca, there are definitely opportunities to tangle with these beautiful fish within a reasonable driving distance. The key is to target the smaller, lesser-known streams and tributaries that feed into the larger rivers in the region. These streams often hold surprisingly good populations of wild brown trout, especially in areas with good cover and cool, clear water. Spring and fall are typically the best times to fish for brown trout, as water temperatures are more favorable and the fish are more active. Early morning and late evening hours are also prime times to be on the water. A local tip: stealth is crucial when fishing these smaller streams. Approach the water slowly and quietly, and use natural-colored lures or flies to avoid spooking the fish. Many of these streams are best fished with light tackle and a fly rod. While you might not catch a trophy-sized brown trout, the chance to fish in a secluded stream and connect with wild fish is a rewarding experience in itself.
