While Fox Lake isn't typically known as a brown trout destination, the Department of Natural Resources has stocked browns here in the past, creating a unique opportunity for anglers seeking something different. The key is targeting areas where cooler water persists, especially near any inflowing streams or springs. The deeper sections of the lake can also hold browns, particularly during the warmer months when they seek thermal refuge. Trolling small spoons or crankbaits along the thermocline can be effective. Spring and fall, when water temperatures are more favorable, are the best times to target browns. Try fishing early in the morning or late in the evening when light penetration is low. A local tip: Pay attention to the DNR stocking reports to see if there have been recent releases, which can concentrate the fish. Be prepared for some searching as the brown trout population is not as established as other species in the lake, but the potential reward of landing a beautiful brown trout in an unexpected location is well worth the effort.
