Brown Trout

If you're chasing brown trout in Wisconsin, don't overlook Lake Delton. While primarily known for its recreational lake, the surrounding tributaries and the Wisconsin River itself offer surprisingly good brown trout fishing. Spring and fall are prime times, as the browns become more active with cooler water temperatures. Focus your efforts in early spring just after ice-out as the browns will be actively feeding, and again in the fall as they prepare to spawn, moving into shallower water. A local tip: the stretch of the Wisconsin River immediately below the dam can be very productive, but be mindful of current and water levels. Access is available through several public access points along the river, but be prepared for some bank fishing as boat access can be limited in some areas. The browns here tend to be wild fish, known for their vibrant colors and aggressive takes, making for a rewarding experience.
