Brown Trout

While not a famed trout destination, Neosho offers a chance to tangle with brown trout in its local waterways. The Rubicon River, though better known for smallmouth, also holds a population of wild and stocked brown trout. Anglers willing to explore its cool, shaded stretches can be rewarded. Spring and fall are the most productive times, with the cooler water temperatures triggering increased activity. Look for trout holding in deeper pools, near fallen logs, and along undercut banks. Access can be a bit challenging in some areas due to thick vegetation, but the rewards are worth it for the dedicated angler. A good starting point is the area near the Neosho Riverwalk, where you can access the river relatively easily. Local tip: Consider using small spinners or dry flies that imitate mayflies, caddisflies, or midges. Because the Rubicon sees fishing pressure, using light line and natural presentations is key.
