Brown Trout

While North Fond du Lac isn't widely known as a brown trout hotspot, the cold-water streams that feed into Lake Winnebago can offer some limited opportunities. These streams are often small and require a stealthy approach. Look for deeper pools, undercut banks, and areas with woody debris. Spring and fall are the best times to target brown trout, as they move upstream to spawn or seek refuge from the warmer lake waters. Fly fishing with nymphs and streamers can be effective, as can small spinners or spoons. Access to these streams can be limited, so be sure to check local regulations and obtain permission from landowners where necessary. The brown trout found in these streams are typically smaller, often in the 8-14 inch range, but they can provide a challenging and rewarding fishing experience.
