Brown Trout

While not a renowned brown trout destination, North Prairie, Wisconsin, offers some surprisingly accessible brown trout fishing within a short drive. The Mukwonago River, though primarily known for its smallmouth bass, also holds a population of wild brown trout, particularly in its upper reaches. Spring and fall are the best times to target these fish, as they become more active with cooler water temperatures. Look for deeper pools, undercut banks, and areas with good cover. A key tip for success on the Mukwonago is to downsize your presentation. Light line and small nymphs or streamers are often more effective than larger lures. Wading is possible in many sections of the river, but be mindful of private property and obtain permission where necessary. The brown trout in this area tend to be on the smaller side, but the challenge of catching wild trout in a relatively urban setting makes it a rewarding experience. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the fishery.
