Brown Trout

While Oconomowoc isn't primarily known for trout fishing, you can find some opportunities to target brown trout in the smaller streams and tributaries that feed into the larger lakes. These streams are often overlooked, but they can hold surprisingly good numbers of browns, especially during the spring and fall. Focus on areas with deep pools, undercut banks, and fallen logs. Fly fishing with nymphs or small streamers is a popular and effective method. Be prepared for tight quarters and challenging casting conditions. A crucial piece of advice: check the WDNR's trout regulations before heading out, as many of these streams have specific size and bag limits, as well as seasonal closures. Public access can be limited, so research stream access points beforehand. While the browns here may not be huge, the solitude and challenge make it a rewarding experience.
