Brown Trout

While not as renowned as other Wisconsin trout streams, the Peshtigo River and its tributaries do offer a chance to tangle with brown trout. The river's cooler, well-oxygenated waters and rocky substrate provide suitable habitat for these fish. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target browns, as they become more active with the cooler water temperatures. Focus on areas with deeper pools, undercut banks, and riffles. Fly fishing is a popular method, with nymphs and streamers being effective choices. For spin fishermen, small spinners and spoons can also produce results. A local tip is to explore some of the smaller tributaries of the Peshtigo River, as they often hold surprisingly good numbers of trout. Be prepared for some challenging wading, as the river can be rocky and slippery. The brown trout in this area tend to be wild and wary, so stealth and a delicate presentation are key to success. Access is available via county roads and public land along the river.
