While not as well-known as other parts of Wisconsin, the Driftless Area around Platteville offers some excellent opportunities for brown trout fishing. The region's spring-fed streams, carved by glaciers long ago, provide cold, clear water that sustains healthy populations of wild and stocked browns. Focus your efforts on streams like the Little Platte River and its tributaries. These waters are characterized by their rocky bottoms, undercut banks, and dense overhanging vegetation. The best time to fish for browns is during the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Early morning and late evening are also prime times. A stealthy approach is crucial – browns are easily spooked in these clear waters. Try using small spinners, nymphs, or dry flies. A great access point is along County Highway D, which parallels the Little Platte in several locations. Remember to check the Wisconsin DNR's trout regulations for specific stream restrictions and bag limits.
