Brown Trout

While Portage isn't typically known as a trout fishing destination, the nearby streams and rivers do offer opportunities for brown trout, albeit sometimes requiring a bit of a drive. Consider exploring some of the smaller tributaries that feed into the Wisconsin River further north and west of Portage. These streams often hold wild and stocked brown trout. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish for them, as the water temperatures are cooler and the trout are more active. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait can be effective. A local tip: Research the Wisconsin DNR stocking reports to find streams that have been recently stocked with brown trout. Remember to check regulations for specific streams, as some may have special restrictions. While the brown trout may not be huge here, the chance to fish these smaller, more intimate streams can be very rewarding.
